The Mission of the Church and The Purpose of The Rock
The Mission for the Church was given to us by the Head of the Church, Jesus Christ, before He ascended into heaven two thousand years ago.
" I have been given complete authority in heaven and on earth. Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age." Matthew 28:18-20
This mission is known as the Great Commission. This mission is not just for the church as a whole, but for the individuals in the church. What is true of the whole must be true of the parts.
We could summarize the command of "The Great Commission" and our vision at The Rock into four main activities.
1. Growing True Community in Christ
The Rock is a part of Summitview Community Church, which is a non-denominational, biblically-based, Christian church. Our church is not a building, but people committed to one another, united in the belief that God has given us a new life and a new future through our shared relationship with Jesus Christ. We are a spiritual family, pursuing deep, meaningful relationships through the love God has for everyone.
Discipleship teams are an essential part of The Rock's community. These groups, made up of 8 to 20 people, meet weekly in homes, with a focus on developing relationships, discovering life change through the Bible and prayer. You are always welcome to become part of this vital dimension of our church life.
2. Producing a Steady Stream of Maturing Disciples
Membership
We believe that God is honored and individuals are blessed by making a commitment to their local church. If you are interested in membership at The Rock, watch for "Discovery", a class designed to familiarize people with the basics of Christianity and our vision as a church. The Discovery class is offered several times throughout the year.
Evangelism Training Class
Every spring we offer a 14-week class that meets once a week to learn the way to easily and clearly explain God's redemptive plan in the Bible, and is a great tool for anyone to use.
Leadership Development
Our leadership development takes place predominately within the context of small group leadership. The Leadership Training Class or LTC is designed to equip and train small group leaders.
3. Transforming the Culture of Colorado State University and Fort Collins
We believe that the message of God's redemption should do more than affect the individual; it should transform the culture for good. We desire for our church to be a driving force to meet needs and bring the love of God to our campus and city, being a city on a hill to shine our Savior to this world.
4. Multiplying Great Commission Churches
We believe that the church is the best way to mobilize the message of God's love and free gift of Christ. Our vision is to continue to plant churches in the US and beyond to bring the transforming power of Christ to the whole world, as Jesus outlined in the Great Commission.
THE ROCK IS A REVOLUTION!
We believe that JESUS CHRIST was the ultimate revolutionary for SOCIAL AND SPIRITUAL CHANGE. We seek to incorporate His teaching and values into our everyday lives; such as loving your enemies, praying for those who hurt you, doing good to others, judging not lest you be judged, showing kindness to all and treating others as you wish to be treated. We seek to love Jesus and to love others as He loves us. Jesus Christ is the heart of the Rock.
We believe that THE BIBLE, the Word of God, is the ultimate guide for revolutionary social and spiritual change, beginning with the individual. We seek to know and understand the Bible and to bring about revolution in our own lives and into our culture by putting the principles of the Bible into practice.
We believe that PRAYER is the ultimate agent of revolutionary change in this world. We seek to connect with the heart of the Living God through sincere, heartfelt prayer as we look for revolution in our world and in the lives around us. We believe that God answers prayer.
We believe that "church" is not a building or an organization, but a family of people who come together throughout the week to experience authentic relationships that spur us on in our spiritual journey. A FELLOWSHIP of real, honest people working together to bring revolution. Gossip, cliques, and hypocrisy have no place at the Rock. Our "church" is a home where the wounded, the spiritual seekers, the prodigal sons, anyone can get their bearing and experience revolution in a safe environment.
We believe that this world needs to hear God's voice. We seek to serve those around us by bringing that voice to our friends, family, and neighbors, living radical lives that WITNESS to the revolutionary power of Jesus Christ, the power that is bringing change, healing, hope, meaning and purpose to this world.
We believe GOD LOVES EVERY PERSON, and we are committed to doing all that we can to show that love to all people. If you're tired of the hypocrisy that has so often been church, if you're tired of feeling ignored or left out, if you want to make a difference in the world, COME JOIN THE REVOLUTION!
